Finding the Fun in an Art Career

When you turn your passion into a business, it is easy to get caught up in the logistics, the sales, and the daily hustle. But every once in a while, an event comes along that strips away all the pressure and reminds you why you fell in love with creating in the first place.

We recently had the absolute pleasure of participating in Oil City’s first wearable art fashion show, and it was a total blast! It was a true taste of art for art’s sake, packed with pure, unadulterated creativity and fun.

An outdoor event with a stage and audience seated under a colorful tent, featuring diverse attendees watching a performance.

Seeing the incredible variety of outfits and wild concepts on display in that amazing stone alley was nothing short of inspiring. From full-on Mad Hatter vibes to vibrant tie-dye masterpieces, the energy in the alley was unmatched.

Klee created an incredible, interactive outfit featuring a mustache and a mysterious trench coat. She absolutely played the part, flashing the secret jewelry collection hidden inside to the judges and the crowd. It was brilliant!

A performer in a pink coat poses playfully on a runway, while the audience watches and smiles.

I decided to lean into the chaos and went all out as a colorful, cardboard-covered “Art-Mageddon.” The goal was to be as playful and ridiculous as possible, and it felt amazing.

A massive kudos to The Artists of The Annex for organizing such an incredible event, to all the participating artists for bringing their wild imaginations to life, and to our amazing community for coming out to support us all. It’s nights like this that remind us we aren’t doing this alone.

It is events like this that remind us of the true nature of art. Building a career as an artist shouldn’t mean turning your craft into a grind. If you lose the fun, you lose the heart of what you do. Finding ways to play, experiment, and collaborate just for the joy of it isn’t a distraction from your career: it’s what keeps it alive.

Reconnecting With Your Spark

Think back to when you first started creating. Before there were deadlines, audience expectations, or algorithms to feed. You created simply because it was fun. Because you had a spark, and you wanted to see what would happen if you followed it.

Over time, it is easy to let the pressure to produce turn a passion into a chore. Here is a little food for thought: When you lose play, you lose the spark that made you start in the first place.

If you are feeling burnt out or disconnected from your work, the solution usually isn’t pushing harder. It is stepping back and remembering how to play again. Reconnecting with your spark requires removing the pressure to produce something “good” and letting yourself create just for the joy of the process.

Advice on Finding Your Way Back

  • Create Something Nobody Will Ever See: Strip away all public expectation. Make a mess, try a silly idea, or work on a side project purely for your own entertainment.
  • Trace Your Steps Back to the Beginning: Revisit the books, art, games, or creators that inspired you when you first fell in love with your craft. Remind yourself what pulled you in.
  • Prioritize Curiosity Over Consistency: If a routine feels like a drag, give yourself permission to follow a random rabbit hole of interest for a day. Passion follows curiosity.

There Is No Success Without Play

When was the last time you did something purely for the joy of doing it? no target metrics, no productivity goals, no end product required.

In a world obsessed with the hustle, we’ve been conditioned to view “play” as the opposite of “work.” We treat play like a reward we only earn after the real work is finished. But here is a bit of food for thought for your day: Play isn’t the reward for success. It’s the engine that drives it.

When you look at the most creative innovators, artists, and problem solvers, they don’t succeed despite playing around; they succeed because of it. Play opens up space in your brain for low-stakes experimentation. It removes the fear of failure because, by definition, play doesn’t have a final grade. When you grant yourself permission to mess around, test wild ideas, and just have fun, you unlock a level of creativity and resilience that pure discipline can never force.

If you’re feeling burned out, stuck in a creative rut, or finding that your goals feel more like a weight than an inspiration, try shifting your focus.

A Little Practical Advice for the Week

  • Schedule “Unproductive” Time: Treat play with the same respect you give your “work”. Block out time this week to do something creative or engaging with zero expectation of a result.
  • Lower the Stakes: If you’re working on a big project, take a piece of it and treat it like an experiment. Ask yourself, “What would this look like if I was just messing around?”
  • Separate Process from Outcome: Shift your pride from how “good” the final product is to how much fun or discovery happened while making it.

The Graveyard of Unfinished Masterpieces (And How to Resurrect Them)

If you’re reading this, there is a 99.9% chance that you currently have a canvas staring at you from across the room, a half-written track mocking you from a desktop folder named “New_Project”, or a sketch that is just a beautifully rendered left eye and absolutely nothing else.

Don’t panic. You are in a safe space.

We will be discussing this tonight during our Rogue Fam Patreon hangout, we are diving deep into the ultimate creative paradox: The Artist’s Struggle with Finishing What You Started. So it got me thinking.

Why is it that starting a project feels like a whirlwind romance, but finishing it feels like doing taxes while riding a rollercoaster? Let’s break down the madness, and more importantly, figure out how to actually cross the finish line.

The Anatomy of a Half-Baked Project

We’ve all been there. The cycle is as predictable as it is painful. It usually goes something like this:

  1. The Spark: “I am a literal deity. This idea is going to change the world. Move over, Da Vinci.”
  2. The Grind: You get the baseline down. It looks good. You feel invincible.
  3. The Muddy Middle: The initial dopamine rush wears off. Suddenly, you have to figure out background perspective, or write a bridge, or fix that weird anatomy issue.
  4. The Shiny Object: Ooh, look, a brand new idea! This new idea is pristine, unruined by the harsh reality of effort.
  5. The Abandonment: You quietly close the file, promising you’ll “come back to it tomorrow.” (Narrator: They did not come back to it tomorrow.)

Why Do We Do This to Ourselves?

It’s easy to call ourselves lazy, but let’s be real, laziness isn’t the culprit. Usually, it’s one of two things:

  • The Perfectionism Trap: As long as a project is unfinished, it still holds the potential to be perfect. The moment you finish it, it becomes real. Real things have flaws. Unfinished things are pure magic.
  • The Dopamine Drop: Brains love novelty. Starting gives you a massive hit of the good stuff. Finishing requires discipline, patience, and a willingness to fight through the “ugly phase” of creation.

How to Actually Finish (Without Losing Your Mind)

So, how do we break the curse? Here are a few battle-tested strategies to help you drag your art across the finish line:

  • Embrace the “Ugly Phase” Every single piece of art goes through an awkward teenage phase where it looks like absolute garbage. Expect it. Welcome it. When a project starts looking terrible, don’t quit, that just means you’re halfway there.
  • Lower the Stakes (What Does Perfect ACTUALLY Mean?)The etymology of the word perfect is actually finished. Done. No more to do. So when you are done, it is perfect.
  • The “Fa-Chunk” Rule When a project feels overwhelming, don’t try to finish the whole thing in one sitting. Tell yourself you’re just going to work on one tiny detail for 10 or 15 minutes. Usually, tricking your brain into starting is 90% of the battle.

Tonight’s Rogue Fam Meeting Challenge:

Before we hop on the call tonight, go into your digital or physical graveyard. Pick one unfinished piece. Bring it to the meeting (or drop a screenshot in the chat). We’re going to talk about why we abandoned them and roast our own perfectionism into oblivion.

See you tonight, Rogues! Bring your coffee, your tea, and your most embarrassing unfinished drafts. Let’s get these masterpieces done.

THIS IS A PATREON MEMBERS ONLY GROUP CALL. You must be a member of our Patreon to join us. Once you are a member, you will have access to the Google Meet Links.

Stop Working So Hard

We’ve all bought into the myth at some point: if you aren’t grinding, you aren’t trying. If you aren’t exhausted, you aren’t pushing hard enough.

So here is a little food for thought to chew on today: Working harder is not the same thing as working better.

When you push through pure exhaustion and force your way through creative blocks, you aren’t actually being productive: you’re just running your engine in place. Real breakthroughs rarely happen when you’re staring blankly at a screen forcing yourself to “figure it out.” They happen in the shower, on a walk, or when you give yourself permission to play and mess around with an idea just for the fun of it.

Play isn’t laziness. Play is brain recovery. It’s the space where your mind connects dots it can’t see when it’s stressed out and hyper-focused on productivity. If you want better results, you don’t need more discipline: you need more play.

How to Stop the Hard-Labor Mindset

  • Recognize Diminishing Returns: Notice the moment your work turns from “effort” to “forcing it.” When you hit that wall, pushing harder only produces mediocre results. Walk away and do something fun instead.
  • Make Play Low-Risk: Give yourself projects where failure doesn’t matter. Doodle something ugly. Write something silly. Build something pointless. Relearn what it feels like to create without judgment.
  • Redefine Rest: Stop treating play like a guilty pleasure. Frame it as necessary maintenance for your brain, because that’s exactly what it is.
