ARTIST STATEMENT

My Little Birds on Wood (The Cypress Project)

This work is part of The Cypress Project, created from the wood of a tree that once stood in our yard. Letting the tree go was not easy. It held years of quiet presence, shade, and memory. Instead of discarding it, I chose to let it live on through these small works.

The little birds in this series are symbols of resilience, voice, and continuity. They are simple, bold, and imperfect, much like the moments they represent. Painted directly onto the tree’s rings and textures, each bird becomes part of the tree’s story, not separate from it.

This red bird feels especially alive. It curves protectively inward, as if resting, healing, or gathering strength. It may be in flight or not in flight. It is in the moment before or after. A reminder that stillness can be just as powerful as movement.

These works are about honoring what was, while allowing something new to emerge. About transformation without erasure. About carrying forward the spirit of something loved.

The tree is gone.
But it is still speaking.
And these birds are its voice.
