In the Beginning (Rafi And Klee Meet)

Rafi and Klee officially became an item in 2009, marking the start of a lifelong partnership fueled by creativity and adventure. Shortly after, they embarked on a journey around the country in a 1992 Ford Explorer, seeking new experiences and inspiration. At the time, Klee was a seasoned musician playing in bands, while Rafi had only recently picked up the guitar, inspired by his musician brother. For Rafi, music was a rediscovered passion after years of stifling criticism in a previous marriage. With that chapter behind him, he began to explore his creativity anew.

When Rafi met Klee, it was as if two old souls had finally found each other after lifetimes of searching. Their connection was instant, and their creative synergy quickly blossomed. Life on the road made it difficult to focus on their other artistic pursuits, like painting or jewelry-making, but music was always within reach. As Rafi strummed his guitar, Klee wrote lyrics, and soon they formed a band. They began performing on AM radio, at private events, and at festivals, sharing their sound with anyone willing to listen. These early performances gave Rafi the chance to confront his stage fright—a challenge he continues to face to this day.

In 2010, they recorded their first album in a makeshift studio: a Key West kitchen and closet in a house they were staying in. Back then, they called themselves Rafi and Klee Music. In 2016, after years of growth and evolution, they renamed the band Better On The Drums to reflect their playful, dynamic approach to music and life. Their journey had only just begun. They recorded a music video which has been re-edited in 2010 of The Happy Song:

It’s Been A Long Musical Journey

Better On The Drums is an eclectic music duo founded by artists and creatives Rafi Perez and Klee. Conceived with a touch of whimsy, the band’s name itself is a playful nod to the duo’s self-professed lack of percussion prowess, embodying their philosophy of never taking themselves too seriously. The band merges thought-provoking lyrics, vibrant rhythms, and empowering messages, aiming to bring joy, inspiration, and smiles to listeners worldwide.

Origins and Musical Beginnings

Klee’s musical journey began long before the formation of Better On The Drums. A seasoned musician, Klee’s career is adorned with performances at iconic venues like Chicago’s Double Door and Los Angeles’s Key Club. Her foray into live music began at the age of 19, an experience marked by equal parts terror and exhilaration. Overcoming her fears, Klee discovered a love for performing that fueled her artistic endeavors for years to come.

“The terror and exhilaration of getting on stage… the lights, the huge sound, the energy of the crowd… letting go and giving it everything you’ve got… there’s nothing like it.”
— Klee

Rafi, on the other hand, began his musical exploration later in life, initially dabbling with a guitar for a few months before joining forces with Klee. Inspired by Klee’s experience and encouragement, Rafi’s passion for music grew as the duo began crafting their unique sound.

The Formation of Better On The Drums

The duo’s paths converged both in life and music, and together they embarked on a creative journey that included visual art, writing, and eventually, the birth of Better On The Drums. Klee became not only Rafi’s partner in music but also his mentor, coaxing musical expression from him that he had never imagined possible.

Though music took a temporary backseat as they navigated the complexities of their artistic careers, their shared passion for melody and rhythm refused to fade. Resurrecting their musical ambitions, they created Better On The Drums, a band that reflects their shared ethos of fun, creativity, and meaningful self-expression.

Musical Philosophy and Impact

Better On The Drums is more than a band—it is a celebration of life’s eccentricities, an exploration of the human spirit, and a testament to the transformative power of creativity. Through their songs, the duo delivers messages of empowerment, hope, and joy, weaving soul-stirring tunes that resonate deeply with their audience. Their ultimate goal is to inspire, uplift, and leave listeners smiling, all while ensuring that their creative process remains fun and exciting.
