ARTIST STATEMENT (Me and It Series)

Me and It is a series about not judging a book by its cover, especially when that book looks a little lumpy, squishy, and gloriously odd.

These creatures were some of the very first characters I created when I decided to break out of my comfort zone and make art that felt like me. Not polished, not proper, not trying to fit into any art world expectation. Just honest, weird, heartfelt creation. The series is called Me and It because when I showed the first one to Klee, she looked at it with a big smile and said, “I love it. Me and it would totally do this and that.” The name stuck.

Each figure is intentionally grotesque, awkward, or strange on the outside, yet doing something unexpectedly sweet. Holding a teddy bear, cheering you on, saying yes to life, offering cupcakes or encouragement. Their simplicity and plainness make their sweetness stand out even more. Their eyes, even though they are just little dots, always carry a soft, genuine spark. Because that is the point. You never know where kindness, encouragement, or inspiration will come from.

To me, these creatures represent the parts of ourselves we do not always show. The messy parts. The shy parts. The parts we think are too strange or too imperfect. But those parts can also be our biggest cheerleaders. They can be the bravest, softest, most vulnerable pieces of us.

This series reminds me that growth and authenticity often come from letting your inner oddball step into the light. These characters are inspiring and supportive despite their appearances, and they encourage you to embrace who you are, even the parts you might have labeled too weird.

Sometimes the most grotesque little creature in the room is the one holding the sign that says you rock.
